Science: Testing and sorting materials. Stretch, Squash, Squeeze

18th Oct 2021

As part of our scheme looking at everyday materials, 2J investigated the properties of different materials. They performed comparative tests to see if materials could be stretched, squeezed or change shape if forces were applied. They then sorted their materials according to their properties. They also discussed how materials with these properties could be useful.

Thinking question:   What if all objects in the world were made of stretchy materials?

PMI- Positive, minus, interesting.

P: You would not get hurt in an accident with a car because it would be soft and change shape when it hit you.

P: You could change everything in your house or street to look the way you want it without having to buy new things.

Minus: You would find it difficult to eat food because it would be like strec=tchy cheese on a pizza.

Minus: If you tried to play sport the ball would stretch in your hand and not go anywhere.

I: If we all had stretchy shoes we may be able to walk to places more quickly.

I: Instead of moving house, you can change its shape if you needed extra bedrooms.
