Year 1A - Black History Month
Today we talked about Black History month. One of the children has a book about Rosa Parks and we briefly introduced the story. The children thought it was very strange and unfair for someone to have to stand up in a bus just because of the colour of their skin. We learned a little bit about Mary Seacole who was a very significant person in history. We tried to understand why Black History Month is important. We talked about equal rights. Two children stood up; we asked if it would be fair if they both did something significant (marvellous, important, fantastic) but we only talked about one of them. We said it would be really unfair and the person who wasn’t recognised would feel really upset.
We then watched a short BBC bitesize clip about Mary Seacole; we will be learning more about her in term 6. The children recalled some information in the clip:
Callum and Maria: she helped the soldiers.
Edie and Maryam: went to help people who were being sick.
Lexi: she looked after people.
Tobias: she sold her book with her story about all her travels and adventures.
Phoenix and Darcie: she was a very kind, lovely person.
Leo: she travelled all around the world.
Ethan: she served hot meals to people who were ill.
Maria: her mother taught her how to farm (and what to use to help make people better).
Maryam: she spent all her money to help the people.
Ethan: her skin was black.
WHAT SORT OF PERSON WAS MARY SEACOLE?
KIND, GENEROUS, SHARING, CARING, THOUGHFUL, SOMEONE WE SHOULD REMEMBER, A GOOD ROLE MODEL, WE SHOULD CELEBRATE HER ACHIEVEMENTS LIKE WE DO IN ASSEMBLY WHEN WE HAVE STAR OF THE WEEK.
