Spirituality

At Christ Church we aim to be ‘a place where everyone can flourish’. As a church school, children’s spiritual development is very important to us. We know, the development of spirituality can have a massive influence on a child’s well-being and their mental health and we aim to create an environment that will nurture people’s minds, body and soul. However, we acknowledge it is a deeply personal journey. Spiritual development relates to fundamental questions about the meaning and purpose of life which affect everyone, and is not dependent on a religious affiliation. We are guided by our Christian faith and the Christian values which we hold dear but we welcome all and we openly encourage children to reflect in the way that suits them best, enabling them to participate in an ongoing process of spiritual realisation and to flourish in a way that will help them find peace, comfort and strength throughout life's ever changing journey.

When considering children’s Spiritual Development, we look at 3 different areas, based on the book and research by Dr Lisa Miller: The Awakened Brain (The Psychology of Spirituality)

  • Awakened Connection (windows)
  • Awakened Attention (mirrors)
  • Awakened Heart (doors)

For each area we aim that the children should have opportunities to observe, reflect and transform. We call these windows, mirrors and doors.

The strength of our Christ Church Experience curriculum and our Christian Ethos, means that opportunities for spiritual development can be found in all areas of the curriculum. Our pedagogical approach to teaching spirituality, ensures that it permeates throughout the curriculum and that our school is a community of enquiry, where everyone is respected and valued. Certain topics lend themselves greatly to particular areas of spiritual development. When selecting literary texts to be studied, teachers look at the opportunities for spiritual development and will link these to areas of Spirituality where it is appropriate.  Our extended personal development program also makes available many opportunities to investigate spirituality through engagement with the natural world and extending the children’s personal development beyond that of the academic classroom.

Children learn that life in all its fullness is a mixture of WOW’s (things that are amazing) and ‘OOHS!’ (things that bring us up short) and also the ‘nows’ the in moment daily life

Each year we celebrate Spirituality Day. This is a lovely opportunity to give children and adults a full day to pause and reflect about their own lives and that of others. Throughout the day the children experience a variety of activities based on our school Christian values (friendship, thankfulness, forgiveness, hope) which include, spiritual art, dance, reflections, thoughts, action for change,  and giving the children children a sense of belonging.
