Scientific Advisors!

LO: To record simple data in answer to a question and make simple measurements.

1A and 1K have been working hard to think of questions we could ask about our investigation this week.

Princess Poppy has a problem; she hates going out in the rain.  Unfortunately, her husband, the Frog Prince, loves the rain!  Princess Poppy wouldn’t mind too much if she could just find a coat that would keep her dry.  The one she bought recently from Primark was ok but it did let some of the rain in and she’s really fed up with leaky raincoats.  She has turned to her trusty scientific advisors in 1K and 1A to ask them to help her.  So they put their heads together to come up with a solution.  Here are some of the questions we thought about:

Evelyn: What material is strong and what is not?

Delilah: Is the material flexible?

Phoenix: What material is most …….. hmmm, not sure.

Darcie: How can we find out which material is most waterproof?

Now we have a good scientific question we need to figure out a way to answer it.  We looked at some of the resources and Evelyn came up with a brilliant idea to put water onto each piece of fabric to see which one was the most waterproof and which one let water through.

We made sure that we used the same amount of water each time we tested the different materials.  We waited for 10 seconds each time and found out that the shower curtain material was extremely waterproof and didn’t let any water through.  The cotton material was the least waterproof but we were surprised to find that the muslin was quite good at holding some of the water back – this surprised us because we felt that we could see the gaps in the material.

We completed our graph to show Princess Poppy our results and have now advised Princess Poppy to ask her design advisors to make her a coat out of a shower curtain!
