2J- Microhabitats

20th Jan 2023

For our science learning this week we explored microhabitats, small places within a larger habitat that an animal or plant might make their home. We discussed that an animals' essential needs must be met in the place where it lives and that animals are suited to the habitat in which they are found. The children were quick to identify the minibeasts they found. They were able to explain as it is Winter there are few bugs around as some animals will be in a larval or egg stage of their life cycle at this time of year or some animals hibernate or migrate. We will revisit the same habitats and micro-habitats to compare what we find in Spring/Summer.

After our bug safari, we applied our maths learning on data and created a pictogram of our findings. Finally the children wrote questions about their findings for me to try and answer.
